You do get an 8-inch touchscreen that integrates standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphones and hooking up is quick and easy, but that's where it ends. With the Spring of the Deluxe package you'll receive adaptive cruise control with enhanced voice control an upgraded 8-inch screen a wireless charging pad and lane-keep assist. Our top-of-the-line test vehicle lacked many of these driver aids and options which are standard on Hyundai Santa Cruz bases.

Towing and Storage

How about towing and storage? Maverick's party pieces are plenty of cubbies and interior storage. That's an impressive number that we're able to beat easily in the real world. On our 115-mile real-world evaluation route our test The Maverick returns 27 mpg in mixed driving. On the same route the Santa Cruz actually leads by 2 mpg but the real ace here is the Maverick's hybrid system. EPA estimates say the hybrid Maverick will return 37 mpg combined (42 city/33 highway). This is the best Non-hybrid compact sedan.


Is Maverick worth the money? At its entry price there's no denying the Maverick's appeal. An EPA-estimated 37 mpg for the hybrid engine and a starting price of just under $22,000 are both very impressive. However our test car cost close to $32,000 and it lacked quite a bit of number of options. There are no driver aids and some other creature comforts that come standard on other trucks. The optional Deluxe Package adds many desirable features and we think it's worth the money.

A three-year/36,000-mile base warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty are pretty typical in trucks and that's what Maverick gets. But Santa Cruz blows it out of the water with a five-year/60,000-mile base warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.


Mavericks are relatively unremarkable. It does its job of looking like a truck so it barely gets noticed. The optional engine is fun and would be more fun to drive but there's a more fun car in the class.

We give it some credit for its efficient hybrid engine as well as its clean interior and low starting price. Pair it with a practical and easy-to-use bed and you've got a unique product but not one with a lot of personality.
